Just like shoes for people, a saddle that fits well can make all the difference to a horse’s comfort, wellbeing, and performance. But not every saddle suits every horse – or every rider.
Finding a knowledgeable, qualified, and compassionate saddle fitter is key. The right fitter will focus on the best fit for both you and your horse, not just on the sale.
Regular saddle checks are essential for horses of all disciplines. For most horses, having their saddle assessed every 4 – 6 months can help prevent long-term physical issues and behavioral problems. For young horses, those starting a new discipline, horses using a new saddle, or those returning from rest or rehabilitation, more frequent checks (every 3 – 4 month) are ideal.
Changes in your horse’s musculature, the flocking of the saddle, or even your own body as a rider can affect saddle fit over time. Staying proactive ensures both you and your horse stay comfortable, healthy, and performing at your best.
